NFR Gives Speech in Washington DC

I have been in Washington DC this week to give a speech at a conference hosted by the Galen Institute and the International Policy Network on the subject of “Is there a Role for Markets in Healthcare?”
Click here for some details of the event.
More details of this will be posted next week when I get back to the UK.

I have worked in healthcare in the U.S. for 30 years, for 15 of those years as a nurse. I love caring for patients in hospitals and in the community, and teaching nursing students at the University of Massachusetts College of Nursing in Boston. I do not love the broken healthcare system that I currently work within in the U.S.; it hurts patients and obstructs clinicians in providing quality care to our patients.
I write to say that I could not DISAGREE more stongly with the conclusions Ms. Evans epouses regarding health care systems improvements. Health care financing and delivery flourishes when it is treated as a human service and public good and is adequately funded, not when healthcare is treated as a commodity in the marketplace. That approach wastes huge sums of money and harms patients and entire communities.
Who funds Ms. Evans and her “NFR” group? I suggest that readers follow the money trail and connect the dots to better understand where Ms. Evans, NFR and others of their ilk are coming from and whose intersts they are speaking for. I will bet you my last dollar that NFR is not a community-based organization but rather is a corporate healthcareindustry sponsored group.
The American Nurses Association’s official health reform policy supports the creation of a national health insurance program for the U.S. with social insurance and a private deliery system. We will do this American-style. The bill to accomplish this reform is HR 676 and is before the U.S. congress now.
Please do not be duped by this type of NFR espoused disinformation and fear-mongering campaigns that are pushed out by the healthcare industry spinmeisters.
Real nurses, doctors and our patients know better. What we need is healthcare for people, not for profits.

Ann is right. The fact that you are still a nurse in the NHS and that you know what you are talking about is a dillusion. In reality you are funded by big business, the CIA and green men for another planet.
Ann on the other hand works for free. As a nurse who believes that healthcare should be devoid from profit and monetary consideration she does not soil her pockets with financial benefit. Instead, she lives on fresh air!
Even better than this, she really trusts politicians and the state! Wow, what a girl. Glad she is to be listened to!!!
